The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.
G. B. Shaw
Adapting Roland Topor's short stories without the use of words is an unreasonable challenge. After all, how do you depict the characters in a believable way rather than as something hilariously and scarily absurd? I think that the absurd is what best shows human foibles, silliness, quirks. It lets you tame those qualities.
As a result whatever is "not pretty" about humans becomes an asset, something interesting and even worth telling tales about. When I read Topor's stories, when I analyse the works of surrealists, when I am fascinated by dada - I see a common, touching sense of the hero's loneliness. Within this context, I think absurdity is very human. It allows you to take a break from the ubiquituous drive for perfection. Sometimes the absurd merely astonishes, but that's something, too. Being surprised matters, because it makes you ask questions. In "Café Panique" we try to show various human stories and various incarnations of loneliness. The attempts to tame it may sometimes be absurd, sometimes they are sad or hopeless, or perhaps silly and embarrassing. However, if our show will let us accept ourselves the way we are - just a little bit - then it was worth it.

THE WROCŁAW MIME THEATRE was created in 1956. Its founder and artistic director was the choreographer and director Henryk Tomaszewski. The unique character of the Wrocław Theatre of Pantomime is the result of Tomaszewski developing a study method of creating a complete mime. Searching for the truth of, and in, the motion and new means of expression allowed for the creation of performance choreodrams: performances with rich scenography and musical setting, where motion is not a simple equivalent of the word, but a synthesis of experiences and impressions. The peculiar director’s visions and author programs of Tomaszewski won the team popularity in the country as well as abroad, as well as numerous awards at international festivals. Since 2009, Zbigniew Szymczyk has been the head director of the Theatre.
